Which base?
Most people who say they dislike lubricant have simply bought the wrong base. Water, silicone and oil behave completely differently on skin, in water, and with condoms and toys.
Water-based
Safe with every condom and every toy material, silicone toys included. Washes off with water and leaves nothing behind.
It dries in faster than the others, but a splash of water brings it straight back rather than needing more from the bottle.
Silicone
Lasts by far the longest and does not wash away in water, so it is the one for the shower or the bath.
Safe with condoms, but it will slowly degrade silicone toys. Pair it with glass, steel or hard plastic instead.
Flavoured
Water-based underneath, with flavour added for oral. The same condom and toy safety as any other water-based gel.
If you are prone to thrush, look for the sugar-free and glycerin-free options — they are gentler and taste less sweet.
